I have so much fear now about the chemicals in our life and our lost connection to nature. I don't want that fear in my life, so I take steps to alleviate my concerns. Steps that work for me and my family.
I buy as much organic food as I can, and yes, it has been a fiscally painful decision. Luckily we have a payoff because do feel better and the food tastes better.
I know that pesticides, preservatives and the like were developed with the best of intentions. Our modern life requires a certain amount of chemical support, but we have gone too far and I want to turn the clock back a little for me and mine.
My amazing mother in law, Merrily, introduced me to essential oils and they have replaced a number of tools. I am *very* grateful that aspirin, ibuprofen, and aleve exist, but I would much rather put a touch of peppermint and lavender on my head for a headache. Same with arnica or panaway on minor injuries. I'd rather use NYR's hand defense than hand sanitizer with triclosan or triclocarban. And I'd rather use lemon eucalyptus than DEET, and I'd rather use skincare and cosmetics that are proven safe.
I know it is important to understand balance and to understand that everyone is doing the best they can, but our need to control our environment has led to some bad outcomes that I know we can address. My way is to choose organic wherever possible, and avoid using chemicals on our bodies or our house.
Do you agree with Jane Goodall? Are you leaving man made chemicals behind?
